Happy New Year . . .

People will be ringing in 2014 in Illinois is approximately 15 minutes.

Katelyn and I ALWAYS ring in the New Year together - Everyone else has usually headed off to bed. Tonight, we are all exhausted as our days have been ultra busy around the house the past several days.

Tonight, instead of standing outside and waiting for the clock to chime Midnight so we can yell "Happy New Year" to anyone that may be listening we are changing it up and making a "New" tradition in our family . . . Beginning the New Year reading God's Word as the clock chimes Midnight.

I ran across this list tonight and LOVE it!

Our theme verse for 2014:

Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him and He will make your paths straight.”

We don’t know what 2014 will bring, but if we trust and follow Him, we’ll be right where He wants us.

General family values

Luke 6:31: “‘Do to others as you would have them do to you.’” Commonly referred to as the Golden Rule, this verse can make a significant impact on how family members interact with each other.

John 13:34: “‘A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.’” Sometimes it’s easy to forget that we love each other, and not just because we are related, but because God first loved us!

Proverbs 4:23: “Above all else, guard your heart for everything you do flows from it.” Guarding our heart and the hearts of our children takes constant effort. Moms and dads, we must constantly be on our guard.

Philippians 2:3-4: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others.” Can you imagine all of the arguments and disagreements that would be avoided if we all lived by this guideline?

Specific actions and attitudes:

Colossians 3:13: “Bear with each other and forgive one another … forgive as the Lord forgave you.” This is another “one another” verse, but it is a great reminder that we don’t forgive because we are the bigger person. We forgive because God has forgiven us.

Matthew 5:37: “‘All you need to say is simply “Yes” or “No”; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.’” This verse is a good reminder to tell the truth and do what you say you are going to do.

1 Peter 5:7: “Cast all your cares on Him, because He cares for you” (NASV). A great reminder that God can handle anything that our family is facing, and that He cares for us!

Also, some Bible Reading
Tonight . . . I am reading from NKJV

Do not remember the former things; nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert. – Isaiah 43:18-19

Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. – Lamentations 3:22-23

~and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. – Ephesians 4:23-24

He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end. – Ecclesiastes 3:11

Look among the nations and watch - be utterly astounded! For I will work a work in your days Which you would not believe though it were told you. –Habakkuk 1:5

Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! For He has done marvelous things; His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory! –Psalm 98:1

Then I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within them, and take the stony heart of their flesh, and give them a heart of flesh. –Ezekiel 11:19

Then He who sat on the throne said, Behold, I will make all things new. And he said to me, Write, for these words are true and faithful. –Revelation 21:5

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. –Romans 8:38-39

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
–1 Peter 1:3-5
