HOME SCHOOL . . . Why Do We Do It?

Home School . . . many people cringe at those two simple words. Home School brings up a myriad of opinion, feelings and comments both positive and negative.

There are many questions surrounding the topic of Home School such as Why do you home school? Who teaches the children? What is taught? How much does it cost? How much time does it take? I can only answer these questions by how "we" home school . . .

Why do you home school?
We chose to home school after much thought and prayer. Currently, we only home school one of our five children . . . Ryan, currently in the fourth grade. Throughout the first semester of this year, Ryan has struggled with being bullied. I have spoken to the teacher, principal, school secretary and the children that were bullying. To no avail, the bullying continued. Ryan also had some teacher/student issues. Add the previous issues and the deaths of Aunt Darlene and Uncle Sam . . . my little boys was "disappearing" . . . he was withdrawing before our eyes. The answer was clear our son needed intervention . . . the answer for us was home school.

Who teaches Ryan?
We chose to use the Abeka Academy Video streaming. Each class is played on the computer through online streaming, there is also an option for DVD use. I have the teacher book, answer key and curriculum for each subject, plus all of the tests, quizzes and worksheets. I really cannot say enough about Abeka Academy! The teachers are engaging and pleasant!  Here is a little video link to see an example of Video school: click HERE. I am always present to listen to the class, instruct as needed, grade papers and record grades, prepare Ryan for the day.

What is taught?
Since we are using Abeka Academy, we are using the Abeka curriculum for grade 4. His studies include Arithmetic, Spelling, Language, History, Geography, Penmanship, Reading and Science.

How much does it cost?
The cost depends upon the choice you make for your home school. Our home school for Ryan - Independent study through Abeka Academy, cost approximately $600.00. Of course, for video streaming or dvd home school, you will need a computer for the child to use.

How much time does it take?
Generally our school day begins at 8:00 a.m. and most days continues until 1:00 p.m. five hours of schooling each day.

I really cannot praise Abeka Academy and curriculum enough! Everything is straight forward and thorough . . . absolutely not lacking in anything!

A few pictures of my home school student hard at work this morning . . .

Ryan loves science . . . they are studying the earth.

Ryan absolutely loves home school and is thriving! His grades this past week have been incredible and I am so proud of him!

Could home school be right for you and your child?
